Technical Questions
Q: Where are you located?
A: Main
office is in Eau Claire WI. Server hosting facility is in Corvallis
OR, Hired contractors are all over the world.
Q: What's with the name
"Nautilus"?
A: Beaten
question really. Well if you must know: Every competitor has
something truck related in their name or names of their products.
Mostly to gain the rankings on the web search or appeal (in their
opinion) to truckers. We are different and we mean it. We did not and
do not want to be confused with any of our competition and we want
our name, our products, tech support and our image to stand out. We
are an alternative to all that you are used to out there. Good or bad
it is up to you to decide. [More here]
Q: How much does the software cost?
A: First license for Nautilus
Driver Edition is $100. Additional licenses for additional
computers are $75 for the same user The cost for the Broker and
Enterprise edition is not established at this time.
Q: Do you send out CDs? Can I send
you a check in payment?
A: No and No. CDs are waist of
time and money and we do not accept checks. We take Visa, Master
card, Discover and American Express only. Our software is a try
before you buy and distributed on-line only. It can only be legally
unlocked by our key server.
Q: Can I burn the installer I
download from your site on a disk?
A: Go for it.
Q: What is your license policy?
A: In the nut shell: The
software is licensed not sold. So in essence you are buying a license
to use it.
The license is issued to you, and is
digitally mapped to your name, email address and hardware
credentials. One license is valid for the machine it was originally
purchased for. Should you have to reinstall the software on your
machine you can retrieve your license from our key server without
paying for it again. If you get another comuter you can swap your license to another hardware using our website. However, if you decide to re-activate the original license it will cost money. In other words you can not have two licenses for price on one.
Q: Will my license work on another
machine?
A: If you get another comuter you can swap your license to another
hardware using our website. However, if you decide to re-activate the
original license it will cost money. In other words you can not have
two licenses for price on one
Q: When does Broker and Fleet
editions come out?
A: No date yet.
Q: Will my license be valid for the
next major version?
A: Small upgrade fee.
Q: Do I get a discount if I buy a
second license for my other computer?
A: Yes. The second license is
discounted. At present the first one is $100 and the second computer
is $75.
Q: When I pay with my credit card
can you see my credit card information?
A: NO. Our server is programmed
to pass your payment information directly to the payment processor.
We do not keep your payment information for security and liability
reasons. The only information that is stored on our server is Your
name, address and email, the last known version of the software you
have, your software licenses and when you became our customer. All of
which is not accessible to anyone except Largo Software.
Q: I downloaded beta back in 2006.
The last version I had was 1.0.XXXX Now I downloaded version IV and I
cannot get it for free, why?
A: Your beta tester
license has been revoked due to no activity on your account. Just
because you installed a beta version in 2006 does not mean you can
get free software. To keep the beta tester license valid you should
have provided us with feedback and keep up with the updates as per
our agreement. Since you disappeared for year and a half and did not
participate in beta test your beta tester license has been revoked
and your account has been deleted. If you like to use the software
you have to pay for it.
Technical
Q: How often do you publish update
for your software?
A: When
our customers find problems they reported to us via built in bug
report feature. We do the fix and post the update as soon as it is
fixed. Even though we are working on the next generation of our
software we maintain the current commercial version. The updates
WITHIN the major release version are free.
Q: What database do you use?
A: PostgreSQL 8.3. Pronounced:
"Post"-"Gree"-S-Q-L. It is a robust and powerful
database. Instead of using flat text files or that joke from
Microsoft called MS Access we use a real, production quality database
engine to insure that your data will not be corrupted. Even if
Nautilus crashes the data still be intact. Unless you mangle the
database installation with some lame registry cleaner tool or mess
around with the installed files and or services your data is in good
hands.
We do recommend to run data backup
often. After all Windows is not known for its stability, on the
contrary as long as you are using Windows you are at risk loosing
your data. So do backups on a separate media (CD, memory stick etc).
Your database backups are encrypted
with your license. So if you make a backup on a memory stick and
loose it no one but you can open it. However, if you re-install the
software and re-register the software with a different name
and email your data backup cannot be decrypted because your license
key will change.
Q: When I run installer I get error
message "Invalid 32bit application"
or "corrupted archive". What's
wrong?
A: You do not have a complete
download. Most likely your download was interrupted and did not
finish. The file should be about 50.05 MB or whatever it say on the
download page. If you see this message, delete the file you
downloaded and start the download over again. Make sure you get all
50.05 MB. (Check the download page for the exact number)
Q: Your database and some libraries
are Open Source, Is open source code a security concern?
A:
Not at all, on the contrary, Open Source is cleaner and much more
secure then anything you find in the commercial world. Source is a
recipe. We do not publish the recipe we publish the finished product
built using this recipe.
Q: Is Internet Access Required to
use this software?
A: NO. Who starting those
rumors? The only time you need Internet access is when you:
By default Nautilus will try to connect to the Internet to check
for updates. However it will work normally if no connection
available. Check for updates at startup can be disabled under Tools &
Preferences / Settings
Q: My Firewall prompted me to grant
the Internet access to Nautilus. Why?
A: By default Nautilus will
check for updates. You can disable that if you like.
Q: When I hit "Update Software" the program
returns an error message "Can not connect to the server"
Why?
A: Please check your firewall settings. Allow
Nautilus to connect if you want to get the update.
Q: I do not understand your version
numbers. Is there a trick to it? What version do I have?
A:
Simple. The major version numbers are shown in Roman letters: I, II,
III, IV, V, VI etc... The build numbers consist of 5 digits. The
first digit is a product line: 1 - driver edition 2 - office
workstation 3 - server, the second digit is the major release number
(corresponds to the roman numeral). The last three are build number
within the version. The odd numbers are test builds and even numbers
are published builds.
Example: build 14042 1 - driver
edition 4 - version 4 (or IV) 0 - 4 - build 042 (even
number means production release) 2 -
build 25003 2 -
office workstation 5 - version 5 (or V) 0 - 0 - build 003
(odd number means test build) 3 -
Q: I know some people are your "Beta
Testers" how many do you have and can I become one?
A:
Yes we have 257 beta testers, most
of those nice folks are truckers who found our software back when it
was free beta download. They have suffered greatly through first
versions and only 40% of them made it to this day. (The other 60%
are no longer our beta testers)
At present we do not need beta
testers for the Driver Edition. As the Fleet Edition matures we will
sign up few fleet owners to try it out in the field. To be our beta
tester means using development version of our software and
provide us with feedback on usability, features and bug reports. As
a beta tester you get free access to all software in the product
line you are testing. For instance if you are testing Driver edition
all future Driver Editions are free to you, but not Fleet editions
etc. If you are flagged on our system as a tester but provide no
feedback your beta test status will be revoked.
Q: I am not a beta tester, I am your
customer. I have problem (suggestion, bug report etc) How do I notify
you?
A: Email us via our
website, Request support directly from the software or call us. If
you do not talk to us we can not help you.
Q: Will you have Mac or Linux
version?
A: Yes. This program is cross platform,
will run on Mac or GNU Linux, we just do not have package (installer)
for Mac or GNU Linux. But, yes it will be done at some point. We do
have people who run Nautilus Driver Edition on GNU Linux, but it is a
manual installation. Look and feel on GNU Linux is the same as on
Windows, Mac installation looks native to Mac. (Requires Os X)
Q: How do I get a Linux version?
A: There is a TAR archive that contains Nautilus IV. You will
have to install it manually. The README file is inside the archive.
Someday we will have a Linux installer, for now Nautilus IV
installation on GNU Linux is a manual procedure. If you are brave
enough to do the manual install let us know we will e-mail you the
tar-ball location and instructions.
Q: Is Linux version of Nautilus
Driver Edition free?
A: No. Unless you want to pay our rent
and buy us some f00d.
Q: Is it open source?
A: We use open source libraries and
contribute back to open source community, but our product is not free
or open source, (unless you want to pay our rent and buy us some
f00d.)
Email
Q: Why do you ask for email address
on the license screen?
A: Simple: Unique identification
The email address makes part of
your identification as a customer unique to the system.
You may not remember some long obscure number or password,
but you can always remember your name and email, and therefore you
can always retrieve your installation license from our server if
need be.
Q: What is your email policy, do you
send un-solicited offers?
A: We hate junk mail or "spam".
We store your Name, your address, your
email and your software license credentials on our server, but this
information is encrypted, locked behind a firewalls and gateways.
Retrieval of that data requires authentication known only to us. We
keep that information so that you can retrieve your software license
and so that we can identify you should you have to call us with a
question and need help.
No one except Largo Software can see
your information. Unless there is a request from a government agency
in case of a criminal investigation.
Q: Do you ever send me anything over
email?
A: Occasionally we send out an
announcement. This always has to do with the information about new
updates or releases we have for you. We do not engage in email
advertising nor do we sell or share your information to anyone at
all. You can always opt out and never receive a correspondence from
us again. |
